Student Opportunities

The Appalachian State University Psychology Clinic offers hands-on learning experience for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in psychology, counseling, and mental health careers. Through internships and training opportunities, students gain valuable experience in evidence-based psychological services under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Undergraduate Internship Program

The Undergraduate Internship Program allows students to become active members of our clinical team and assist with various aspects of Clinic operations, such as administering phone screenings to potential clients, attending weekly staff meetings and case presentations, and other tasks to assist the clinicians.

Student interns are expected to devote 8 hours per week (equivalent to 3 credit hours) at the Clinic, which includes weekly staff meetings (Monday or Wednesday, 9am-11am) and 6 hours split across two days (between Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm)

Eligibility

To be considered, students must:

  • Be an undergraduate psychology major
  • Must have completed Research Methods (PSY 3100) prior to the internship semester
  • Be enrolled in an internship course that has a class meeting requirement (PSY 4900)

Graduate Student Training Opportunities

The App State Psychology Clinic provides supervised training opportunities for master’s and doctoral students preparing for careers in mental health and psychological services.

Graduate trainees provide therapeutic services to individuals from the University and surrounding community, ranging in age from young childhood through older adulthood. Formal assessment opportunities are available to trainees who have received extensive assessment training, including at least one semester-long course in the provision of standardized assessment and report writing that involved supervised administration of standardized assessments.
