Our Treatment Approach
The App State Psychology Clinic is committed to providing effective, evidence-based treatment tailored to each client’s needs. Treatment incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) models, a research-supported approach that helps individuals understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while learning practical skills for managing challenges. Many treatment plans are relatively short-term and focused, often lasting between eight and sixteen sessions, although the length of treatment varies based on individual goals and circumstances.
The Clinic is not a medical facility and does not prescribe medication. If you or your child may benefit from medication, you will need to work through a medical doctor, such as a pediatrician, family physician, or psychiatrist.
Anxiety Treatment
For individuals experiencing anxiety-related concerns, treatment may include:
- Identifying the nature and causes of anxiety symptoms
- Learning about anxiety, the fear response, and effective coping strategies
- Developing healthier thinking patterns
- Building skills to manage anxiety and related emotions (depression, anger, etc.)
- Gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations in a controlled, safe environment
If desired, treatment may incorporate virtual reality (VR) technology to practice exposures for:
- Fear of flying
- Heights
- Bridges
- Storms
- Public speaking
Group Therapy
In addition to individual therapy sessions, the Clinic periodically offers group therapy that addresses DBT skills and/or ADHD symptoms.
ADHD Treatment Group
The ADHD Treatment Group is an eight-week program for college students who have been diagnosed with ADHD or experience significant ADHD-related symptoms. Group sessions focus on organization and time management training. The group meets weekly via Zoom during the fall and spring semesters and costs $50 total.
Please contact the Clinic at 828-262-6639 to learn whether the ADHD treatment group may be a good fit.
Telehealth Therapy
Therapy services are available through telehealth appointments (via Zoom) for individuals located in North Carolina. Telehealth offers a convenient way to access care while maintaining the same commitment to evidence-based treatment and clinical supervision. Clients participating in telehealth should have a computer/tablet/smartphone, webcam/built-in camera, microphone, stable internet connection, and private space for appointments. To set up a telehealth appointment, please contact asupsychclinic@appstate.edu.
Please note that assessment services are not available through telehealth.
