Fees, Insurance and Payments

The Appalachian State University Psychology Clinic is committed to providing high-quality psychological services at an affordable cost. We accept several insurance plans, offer a sliding fee scale for eligible clients, and provide transparent information about fees before services begin.

If you have questions about costs, insurance coverage, or payment options, please contact the Clinic.

Insurance

The Clinic can directly bill the following insurance plans:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC)
  • Evernorth (formerly Cigna)
  • Tricare
  • Aetna
  • United Healthcare
  • Medicaid

We are considered out-of-network for All Savers UHC and any out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield plan. Out-of-state plans typically do not cover services if providers are considered out-of-network. We can submit an initial reimbursement attempt for clients; however, coverage is determined entirely by your insurance provider and reimbursement cannot be guaranteed. For clients with other insurance carriers, we can provide an itemized service invoice that may be submitted directly to your insurance company.

Please note: Insurance coverage varies by plan. Clients are responsible for any remaining balance after insurance payments have been processed.

Service Fees

The following fees represent our standard rates before insurance benefits or sliding scale reductions are applied.

Sliding Fee Scale

The Clinic offers a sliding fee scale to help make services more affordable for eligible clients. Reduced fees are determined based on annual household income and household size.

To obtain a sliding scale reduced fee, a copy of the family’s most recent tax return or other financial documentation must be provided to verify eligibility. The Sliding Scale Application will also need to be signed and completed during the appointment.

The sliding fee scale is updated annually to keep up with federal and local guidelines.

Payment

We accept payment via checks, cash, and Visa or Mastercard credit/debit cards. We are currently unable to accept Discover or Flex Benefit Cards.

Online Payments

Existing clients may pay an outstanding balance online. Please only use the online payment system if your clinician or Clinic billing staff has instructed you to do so. When making a payment, you will be asked to enter the balance amount manually. The amount entered should match the balance provided by your clinician or billing staff.

Good Faith Estimate

“Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges” Under the No Surprises Act

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
  • You can request a Good Faith Estimate in writing from your health care provider before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call the App State Psychology Clinic at 828-262-6639.
