School Counseling

The Appalachian State University Psychology Clinic provides limited school-based counseling services in select local schools. These services are designed to help students develop coping skills, build resilience, and address emotional, behavioral, and school-related challenges that may affect their well-being and success.

By providing support in the school setting, we can work collaboratively with students, families, and schools to help young people thrive both academically and personally.

Areas of Support

Our school counseling services address a multitude of concerns, including (but not limited to):

  • General coping skills
  • Anxiety and worry
  • Stress
  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Interpersonal difficulties
  • Panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Social and performance anxiety
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related concerns
  • Test and school anxiety
  • Childhood separation anxiety
  • School refusal or school avoidance

Clinical Oversight

All school counseling services are overseen by Dr. Jacqueline Hersh, a licensed psychologist and faculty member in App State’s Department of Psychology.

In clinical practice, Dr. Hersh is a generalist clinician (working with all ages and many mental health concerns) with a specialization in child clinical psychology. Her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University and predoctoral internship at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center were completed in child track specializations, and her postdoctoral work at Harvard University was focused on treatments for youth mental health concerns (including as a MATCH-ADTC trainer and consultant/supervisor).
