  1. About the Psychology Clinic

About the Psychology Clinic

Established in 2001, the Appalachian State University Psychology Clinic is a community-based training clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive, evidence-based psychological services to High Country residents and App State students at an affordable cost. We offer high-quality psychological assessment and treatment services to children, adolescents, and adults while supporting the education and training of future mental health professionals.

Our Mission

The mission of the App State Psychology Clinic is to:

  • Provide high-quality psychological assessment and treatment services to residents of Western North Carolina.
  • Conduct research aimed at advancing our understanding of effective assessment and treatment strategies for a variety of psychological problems.
  • Train graduate students in the provision of evidence-based psychological services.
  • Be sensitive to the effects of diversity-related issues such as the impact of privilege, oppression, marginalization, discrimination, and other forms of intolerance on our patients’ stress, coping, and adjustment. Within the Psychology Clinic, we believe it is important to view an individual in their contexts, which are often shaped by systems of oppression, while also recognizing and celebrating strengths that arise from our differences. We strive to create an atmosphere where we foster dialogue and promote actions that respect and honor all persons. As a training clinic, we are based in a program that strives to develop in our students a professional identity grounded in an active sense of social responsibility combined with an appreciation and respect of cultural and individual differences.

Our Team

The Clinic is staffed by graduate student clinicians from App State’s Clinical Psychology graduate program and operates under the leadership of Dr. Jacqueline Hersh, a licensed psychologist and faculty member in App State’s Psychology Department. Dr. Hersh is credentialed by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.
